Why are some road bicycles so damn expensive? What am I missing out?

Why are some road bicycles so damn expensive? What am I missing out?

Here in Australia… some of the racing bicycles are tagged at 22000-25000 AUD (in USD that’s nearly the same…)…. On the other hand for 17 grand… I can bring home a BRAND NEW Suzuki GSXR1000 with full Insurance Cover and rego…..!! It will do nearly 190 MPH off the showroom….
Now, I am not directly comparing BUT…. Even a 50cc Moped is ‘technologically’ more advanced than the Best possible bicycle… Let alone a gixxer !!… isn’t it ??…. For 22 grand.. I can bring home a Ducati.. Harley… … even a SUBARU Impreza….!!
I know the bicycles are using carbon fibbers these days.. so on… still how come a bicycle be more expensive than a SUZUKI GSXR100 or A Honda CBR1000RR ???
What am I missing out?

Rather than compare a top bike to a run of the mill motorcycle a better comparison is a family sedan to a Formula One race car. As with most things linear increase in quality and performance comes at an exponential increase in price. At the top end of the curve, you get very little improvement for a big increase in price.

Very expensive road bikes are also very light but still robust and stiff enough to ride. That takes advanced (and expensive) materials to achieve. Such bikes have parts made from carbon fiber, titanium and aluminium alloys, kevlar, etc. While all of these materials are used on lower end bikes the parts on top level bikes are often made in small numbers … making them more expensive than mass market components. In addition, racing bikes are designed to shift quickly and smoothly, brake effectively, etc. … meaning that components are engineered for tollerances and performance far above what the average recreational rider needs (Thats why Dur-ace or top end Campagnolo parts are so expensive). Bottom line … it cost $$$ for lightness (with strength) and precision operation.

Furthermore, unless you are a top level racing cyclist there is no need (other than showing off to friends) to buy expensive bikes. I ride with some pretty fast riders and only one (a serious racer) has a bike that cost more than $3000 (Can).

The fields of pharmaceutical economics and health economics/policy are reaching a point of convergence. This is due to both the widespread availability of pharmaceutical treatments, accompanied by broader insurance coverage, and the regulation of prescription drugs in both private and government plans. This book will bridge the gap. We will explore developments in both U.S. and International setting. The system of the U.S. is characterized by a mix of private and government insurance for prescription drugs with the expansion of Medicare Part D. Most other developed countries are characterized by social insurance with either the government as a single payer such as in Canada or Australia, or a national health service as in many other European countries.

Taxing Insurance Companies

Taxing Insurance Companies

This study is part of a series of Tax Policy Studies produced by the Fiscal Affairs Division of the OECD. It examines the difficult area of applying income taxation to the life and property and casualty insurance industries. Particularly in the case of life insurance, OECD countries have pursued a variety of methods to try to tax the income arising in insurance companies. This study analyses the policy and technical problems that arise in designing an effective means of income taxation. In addition to outlining the general approaches used by OECD countries in this area, the authors have drawn upon their extensive practical experience in designing a tax system for the insurance industry in their home country. Based on this experience, they have addressed the major policy questions faced by tax policy-makers in this area and included a critical analysis of the various technical issues which arise in turning theory into practice.

Excerpt from book: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SELLING LIFE INSURANCE SECTION A. ANALYSIS OF SALES INTERVIEWS A negro preacher was asked one day how it was that his congregation behaved so well. He replied: "Boss, it’s dis way. Fust, I tells ‘em what I’se gwine to tell ‘em. Den I tells ‘em. Den I tells ‘em what I done tole ‘em." This book is patterned somewhat on the old negro preacher’s scheme of driving a point home. First, we shall review two sales interviews, so that we may have some idea of what we are going to learn. Then we are going to learn it, and, finally, we are going to go over it again, emphasizing many of the points in still greater detail. Outline Of The Contents In The Psychology Of Selling Life Insurance The book is divided into five sections, as follows: Section A. Analysis of Sales Interviews. Section B. Motives for Buying Life Insurance. Section C. The Strategy of Selling Life Insurance. Section D. The Strategy and Tactics of the Prospect. Section E. The Tactics of Selling Life Insurance. In Section A, two interviews, based upon actual sales, are discussed from several angles. In this way the reader is given a bird’s-eye view of the entire course. In addition to this, the reader has ample opportunity to note the points which he does not understand or with which he disagrees, and so becomes the better prepared for the detailed discussion of the whole subject which immediately follows. In Section B, the psychological principles underlying selling are explained in as non-technical a manner as possible and are directly applied to selling. The necessary steps in planning or preparing for a sales interview are taken up in order in Section C. The term "strategy" of selling has been employed to cover this phase of the selling process. Section D considers the sales…

The A to Z of Australia

The A to Z of Australia

$53.98

The last continent to be claimed by Europeans, Australia began to be settled by the British in 1788 in the form of a jail for its convicts. While British culture has had the largest influence on the country and its presence can be seen everywhere, the British were not Australia’s original populace. The first inhabitants of Australia, the Aborigines, are believed to have migrated from Southeast Asia into northern Australia as early as 60,000 years ago. This distinctive blend of vastly different cultures contributed to the ease with which Australia has become one of the world’s most successful immigrant nations. The A to Z of Australia relates the history of this unique and beautiful land, which is home to an amazing range of flora and fauna, a climate that ranges from tropical forests to arid deserts, and the largest single collection of coral reefs and islands in the world. Through a detailed chronology, an introduction, appendixes, a bibliography, and cross-referenced dictionary entries on some of the more significant persons, places, and events; institutions and organizations; and political, economic, social, cultural, and religious facets, author James Docherty provides a much needed single volume reference on Australia, from its most unpromising of beginnings as a British jail to the liberal, tolerant, democracy it is today.

By reading his grandmother’s memoirs, Sam begins to connect to his family’s ancestral home and understand the reasons that she and her daughter after her were so drawn to the Australian landscape and the mystery found there.Drawing upon Australian culture and Aborigine mythology, The Australia Stories captures the strong hold that a place can have upon a person and the way a family’s legacy can live on in the present.About the AuthorTodd James Pierce was raised in California and is a graduate of UC Irvine’s MFA program and of Florida State’s Ph.D. program. His short stories and other writings have been included in more than fifty magazines and journals nationwide, including The Missouri Review, The North American Review, Fiction, Shenandoah, and The Indiana Review. He has lived in Australia and now resides with his wife in Tallahassee, Florida. The Australia Stories is his first novel. From the authorThe Australia Stories is the story of Sam Browne’s family—his famous grandmother who goes missing while hiking across the Outback and his mother who tries to fill the space left in her wake. But for me the novel began one spring afternoon when I was in Sydney with a friend and his grandfather, Mr. May. I’d just graduated from college and was teaching high school in Australia. After lunch we walked down to the water, right by the Harbour Bridge. We stood there a long time, the spring sun slanting down on us, and I noticed how Mr. May kept looking up at the bridge, the skin crinkling at the corners of his eyes. That bridge was a beautiful structure, a large steel arch spanning the harbor. Locals called it “The Coat Hanger” because of its shape. Mr. May told me something then that I’d never known: when he was a young man, during the Depression, he’d helped build that bridge, first with quarry work and later by carrying tools for men who were experienced in welding. I never forgot the way he looked at it, the longing visible in his face, and I never forgot what he said, “It’ll be here long after I’m gone.”I carried that day with me for a long time because I understood he was contemplating something I’d never considered: what it means to have a full life and what it means to leave it. Eventually Mr. May became my inspiration for the character Gregory, and eventually I understood that Gregory was married to one of my heroines, the woman who disappeared in the Outback. Gregory and his wife had children, and their children had children, one of whom turned out to be Sam Browne, the narrator of this book. It wasn’t until the following year, until I’d written the first two sections, that I

Home Accountz

Home Accountz

$40

We are delighted to announce a new product: Home Accountz. This replaces our ever faithful Personal Accountz software. Home Accountz has been rewritten from the ground up using the same technology we used for our flagship product Business Accountz. That is why we decided to give it a new name. New Features Include Import CSV as well as QIF and OFX Powerful user definable views View/Edit multi-accounts and individual accounts Multi-currency Extensive charting Video how to's And lots more… A huge benefit this application has over other software of this type is that just about every table of data you see is fully editable. It uses a fantastic technology called 'Views'. Views enable you to set up tables the way you want them. You choose which columns to show or hide, their order and size and sorting. You then complete the view by defining powerful filters and charts and graphs. To use these views, just name them and they can be accessed at will from a simple drop down menu. There are a number of preset views for you to play with including the ability to forecast, view just the last week, view uncleared transactions and many more. But Views is only one great aspect of Home Accountz. Because it uses a tree structure for your accounts and categories, which is fully editable, you can create as complicated or as simple a set of accounts as you want (but don't worry, it comes pre-installed with a simple set of accounts ready to go). No other accounting software has ever given this kind of flexibility, and it is amazingly powerful. For example you could set up a group called Expenses (there is one there by default when you run the software by the way!), then add a further group to that called Motor, then add another group in there for, say, Ford. Inside the Ford group you can have Petrol, MOT, Insurance, Servicing etc. The balances are shown hierachically, so you can not only see at a glance your overall expenses, but also your total Motor expenses within that, and your total Ford costs, right down to how much you spent on servicing. You will know precisely how much you have spent and on what. Home Accountz also includes one of the most powerful budgeting modules ever seen. You can set budgets for complete groups and have them automatically averaged monthly, but you can also go right down to individual levels and manually change individual months too. So for example, you may want to budget, say, £250 a month on Food, but for Holidays you may want to set a single budget for July of £1,000. You can create multiple budgets too, then compare them with your real spending, all at the click of the mouse. Home Accountz is super fast. And most things only take a mouse click or two, so you will rarely need to refer to the extensive set of video tutorials available from the Help menu. On top of all this, you can also include Direct Debits, Direct Credits, Standing Orders and in fact any type of transaction you want

Bundarbo: A Story Of Rural Australia

Bundarbo: A Story Of Rural Australia

$21.39

A history of rural Australia across two centuries, told through the eyes of the people who have lived and worked in a small valley in rural New South Wales. 'I had two paddocks to look after,' said Les Gilpin, 'one of 1800 acres, one of 1000 acres. My job was to keep the rabbits down.' Les left school when he turned fourteen and went to work as a rabbiter, living in a corrugated iron hut, on a remote corner of a property. This was Australia in 1945. Les stuck it out at the Back Hut, as his little home was called, for six years. His voice is the authentic voice of Australia. Before he went to war in 1939, Geoff Sheehan had hardly ever been out of the valley of his birth. He grew up in the valley believing that he would be a worker all his life, good with horses, much valued for his hard work and loyalty. Through his service to his country in war Geoff Sheehan became a landowner in the valley, a soldier-settler. His is the authentic voice of Australia. The Valley tells the story of rural Australia in the years of white settlement from the earliest days to the present. It is a story of great wealth and hard work, of struggle and achievement. It is a story of the love of the land; of the creation of community; of the love of country. Michael McKernan has listened to the stories of the people of the valley of Jugiong in southern New South Wales, and in telling their stories he shows that in knowing the detail of the individual stories we know the national story. The voices of The Valley are of workers and owners, of soldiers and politicians, of men and women, of rabbiters and shearers. The Valley presents the voice and story of Australia.

Her displacement carries into the lives of her seven children – their stories witness to the impact of orphanage life and the consequences of having a dark skin in post-war Australia. Vividly rekindled, the lives of her family point the direction home for Candice."Home" is a powerful and intelligent first novel from an author who understands both the capacity of language to suppress and the restorative potency of stories that bridge past and present.

A Short History Of Australia

A Short History Of Australia

$15.69

On 26 January the convict transports moved into their new home as a handful of Aborigines on the shore set up a horrid howl and indicated by angry gestures with sticks and stones that the white man was not wanted. More than a decade after his death, Manning Clark remains Australia’s most eminent and controversial historian. A Short History of Australia , considered by many to be his greatest work, charts the nation’s social, cultural and political growth from the arrival of that first shipload of English convicts at Sydney Cove to the late twentieth century – with remarkable breadth of vision. His observations are as entertaining as they are enlightening. In this new edition, a postscript by his son Sebastian Clark brings the book right up-to-date, revealing many enduring parallels between the past and present.

Mistletoes of Southern Australia

Mistletoes of Southern Australia

$24.69

Mistletoes are an enigmatic group of plants. Lacking roots and depending on other plants for their livelihood, they have inspired a range of beliefs throughout the world. Some people regard them as mystical plants endowed with magical properties, others as destructive weeds that devalue native habitats, and still others as beautiful native plants that support wildlife. This book represents the first thorough treatment of mistletoes in Australia. It summarises their evolutionary origin and global distribution, highlighting diversity patterns in Australasia, and describes the ecology and life history of mistletoes, detailing the variety of animals that depend on them for food and shelter. The book discusses the cultural significance of mistletoes, compares imported European beliefs with home-grown Indigenous lore and looks at the role of mistletoe in contemporary art, design and medicine. It also explores the management of mistletoes, noting those situations where mistletoe becomes too abundant and offering practical solutions to achieve a more balanced outcome. Finally, there is a guide to identifying mistletoes, including detailed species accounts for all 46 species found in southern Australia. With 51 specially commissioned watercolours by artist Robyn Hulley and more than 130 colour photographs, Mistletoes of Southern Australia is the definitive authority on these intriguing native plants.
